Welcome to the website of Mothers’ Union Peterborough.

A note from our president:

My Dear Friends,

I hope you have had an enjoyable Christmas. As I write this, we are in January and it is has been getting colder, and wetter, but Spring is on the way. We shall soon see the snowdrops in the gardens and days will start to get warmer.

Since I last wrote, much has happened…

We have had the Coronation of King Charles III.

Those at our April Forum signed a card for the King, as he was in our prayers whilst he was preparing for his Coronation. This was sent to Buckingham Palace – imagine the delight when I received a card from King Charles and Queen Camilla thanking us for our kindness.

We have had the Annual Gathering, in York. Fourteen members from the Diocese attended the Annual Gathering at the York Barbican, which ended with Evensong at York Minster – with the Archbishop of York in attendance!

We have a new Bishop! The Right Reverend Debbie Sellin has been appointed as our new Bishop and we look forward to welcoming her and her family, to the Diocese.

This year we have been able to return to all branches writing Christmas cards for those in Peterborough prison and other communities. For some, this is the only card received so thank you in helping with this important ministry.

We have now formed a link with the Chaplaincy Team at HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough and have started exploring ways in which Mothers’ Union can help them and the prisoners they look after. More news will follow!

A group of us met in Peterborough for Global Day (November 25th) and the start of 16 Days of Activism. We walked through the town centre behind St. Botolph’s Branch banner. Once we reached St. John’s Church we stood outside handing out paper doves, knitted hearts and leaflets regarding Domestic Abuse. After a welcome hot drink we were led by Revd. Michelle Dalliston in a short service of reflection along with a reserved spot for the Red Chair Project, as we reached out across the world in Jesus’ name and that there will be no more 1 in 3.

For 2024, we look forward to our Forum meetings, three times a year.
Please do try and come along, they are a fantastic opportunity to come together in ‘Faith, Fun and Fellowship’ as well as gain an insight as to what is happening around the Diocese. Our next one is on 13th April 2024 at St Mary’s Church Wollaston (NN29 7RJ) and car parking is available next door to the church at Scott Bader’s.

We look forward to our Diocesan Festival, this only happens once every three years. Do remember to save the date – it is on Saturday, September 14th, 2pm, at Peterborough Cathedral. It will be great to see all our members and their banners parading up the main aisle!

I have enjoyed getting out and about the Diocese, visiting branch meetings, sharing worship at various services as well as Coffee Mornings and Afternoon Teas – there is something to be said about the ‘Ministry of Cake’!

Thank you for making me feel so welcome it has been lovely spending time with you – and for those of you I have yet to meet, I shall have that to look forward to! Please do invite me to your events in 2024.

With my love and prayers
Helen Lynett, Diocesan President
